At School Last Night....

At last night`s class we were to hand in a questionnaire the instructor had given out the previous week. The questionnaire included things like ... if we were part-time students or full-time students, if we worked in our field and so on. The last question was ...’is there anything I should know about that may be a challenge to your learning?’ I pondered this question a long time. I so did not want to play the cancer card. I wanted to complete school without getting any possible preferential treatment.

As I was considering my decision, I thought ... if this was a class where I could hide in a corner, I probably wouldn’t consider sharing the fact that I was under active treatment but this class is very interactive. I will be required to do presentations in front of the group and that scares me a bit. I wasn`t sure I could do it all without appearing a bit odd.

My decision was to tell her, the instructor, that I am receiving chemotherapy for cancer. I feel a weight has been lifted off my shoulders.

I'm so glad you told her. You have so much to offer, Daria. Many will receive a blessing from what you share, your strength, your journey, your attitude, your humility. I hope when this class is finished, others will come to appreciate you as much as I have:)

Oh good! It is only fair to yourself that you did that!

I know that it took a lot of courage for you to share your cancer status on the questionnaire. I feel it was definitely the right thing to do and I'm glad to read that it has lifted a weight from your shoulders. Once again I am in awe of your courage and determination.

I can understand your hesitation but I believe you did the right thing in disclosing your illness. You may need some accomodations at some point and the instructor will be happy to do that for you.

That is such a difficult decision to make.

In this case I think revealing was the right choice.

Good luck with your class.

Hey Daria!
I too use the "cancer card" sparingly, but with all that we go through, if you can catch a little break now and then by using the "card" then by all means use it :) After all, you really do deserve a break and a little extra from time to time as that is not usually the norm for our lives. Enjoy your class and I am glad you feel good about your decision :)
