Jury Duty

Yesterday I received a juror summons in the mail. I’m going to request to be excused because I’m on active cancer treatment. I just don’t think my mind or body has the stamina to serve on a jury. Would you believe the only other time I was summoned was in 2001 and guess what ... I was on active treatment for cancer then too. I would love to experience being a juror and deciding a case but it looks like luck is against me once again.

Some of my favourite shows have been Judge Judy, Joe Brown, Wapner and all the other judges on People’s Court. I’ve been watching these in the anticipation that one day I could put all that training to use ... like being on a jury ... Not!

That's funny, Daria, I was called to jury duty this year, too. First time in over 40 years. I was willing to serve but they took one look at my short, short hair and released me. I was okay with that as it was a boring case where one insurance company was suing another insurance company for stealing their customers.

I think you are doing the right thing to pass on the jury duty -- you have enough on your plate ... someone else can take your seat!

I to had a jury summons when I was having my radiation. I was excused from serving on the jury. Expect a call though from the Sheriff's office but the one who called me was so nice about it. It was a good thing because the case lasted for over a month.

I am thinking you have the best excuse for getting out of jury duty. Kinda funny that those that want to serve are unable and those that don't want to serve have no excuse to get out of it!!

The only time I got called to jury duty was during my treatment too. And I really wanted to go. Hopefully they will call me again.

Must be a pattern here... I also got called to jury duty in the midst of chemo. Being a lawyer, I had another lawyer friend get me excused for the longest time possible...which turned out to be one month from the day I finished radiation. I spent 2 days in voir dire only to be excused by the judge (as I knew I would be). You are right to get excused. You have better things to be concentrating on right now. Jury service is important, and could be interesting, but maybe not right now. Best of luck to you.

I have always wanted to do jury duty and have never been called. My husband has been called 3 times.

I too received a summons right before I was to do radiation for circuit courts (long trials). I had only served once before on a district court jury (short trials). I'm expecting a summons any day now that I am out of treatment.

Daria,

I hope you can get out of it. I love all the jury shows too. I am always amazed at the people that show up on them. I especially like watching Judge Judy give an earful to those who need it. I keep praying.

During jury selection, I had a judge insist that I had to reschedule some tests. If the hospital wouldn't reschedule me then HE would call them. Of course, I was the first person let go - both defense & prosecutor practically yelled out my name to be excused. I was astounded at the arrogance of the judge.

Doesn't it figure? I've always wanted to be on a jury, too, and I was homeschooling for 7 years and could have easily served... but I've never, ever been called. My husband was, and complained bitterly... and there I was, wanting to serve but unwanted!! And now, of course, I couldn't manage it.

As I said, doesn't it figure?
